In May of last year, 10-year-old Michelle Briggs of Grant starting complaining of knee pain. Parents Chod and Pam Briggs attributed it to growing pains, or thought she bumped it and the pain would subside in a couple days.

When ice and ibuprofen didn’t help the swelling, the couple decided something wasn’t right, leading Chod to take her to the doctor.

Chod had just started a new job in Forsyth, Montana, 570 miles from Grant, taking with him two of their four children, Michelle and Tyler, 14, while Pam stayed in Grant with their other two children, Ashley, 18, and Alyssa, 12, to finish the school year.

After x-rays and a CT scan, the doctors informed Chod they believed Michelle may have bone cancer. He frantically called Pam with the devastating news, telling her to come to Montana immediately, only to find out the next day they wanted Michelle at Children’s Hospital in Denver.
