Perkins County Commissioners approve fair parade route, set zoning hearing, hear of assessor retirement
The Perkins County Board of Commissioners approved resolutions related to the county fair parade and banking access, scheduled a public hearing on zoning regulations and learned of a longtime employee’s upcoming retirement during its regular meeting April 20 at the Perkins County Courthouse.
Commissioners Darin Robertson, Mark Bottom and Steven Tucker were present, along with County Attorney Richard Roberts and County Clerk James Brueggeman.
The board approved the meeting agenda and minutes from its April 6 meeting, as well as payroll and claims totaling $73,806.22 in employee salaries. Expenditures included payments to various vendors, utilities, service providers and county funds.
No correspondence was received. Public comment was held from 8:40 to 9:08 a.m., during which Leon Pankonin addressed the board.
The commissioners briefly recessed the regular meeting at 9 a.m. to convene as the Perkins County Board of Equalization before reconvening the regular session at 9:05 a.m.
During reports from county officials, Assessor Peggy Burton informed the board she plans to retire effective June 15. Burton has served 10 years as county assessor and 26 years as a county employee. Commissioners expressed appreciation for her years of service.
Updates were also provided by Brueggeman, Treasurer Julie Sestak, Sheriff Jeffrey Miller, Highway Superintendent Steve Leimer and Assistant Highway Superintendent Brian Brassfield regarding their respective departments.
In unfinished business, Ed Dunn of the West Central Nebraska Development District, who also serves as the county’s planning and zoning administrator, reviewed updates to the Perkins County Comprehensive Plan and Zoning Regulations. Dunn said the Perkins County Planning Commission has recommended approval of the plan following additional revisions. A public hearing on the comprehensive plan and zoning regulations is scheduled for May 18 at 9 a.m.
In new business, commissioners approved Resolution 2026-10, authorizing Courtney Ingold, a clerk in the Perkins County Treasurer’s Office, to access the Pinnacle Bank online banking system with signatory authority. Treasurer Julie Sestak was authorized to establish the account access.
The board also approved Resolution 2026-11, allowing temporary use of a state highway for the Perkins County Fair Parade scheduled for July 18.
Commissioners approved an estimate from Goff Services, not to exceed $10,000, for repairs to the Perkins County Fairgrounds lift station.
Brueggeman also presented information on the Frenchman Valley Coop Fleet+ Advantage Program. The board approved enrollment and authorized the chairman to sign the necessary paperwork.
County Attorney Roberts discussed a legal matter involving a notice that could not be delivered by certified mail. The board approved issuing an updated letter regarding a dangerous center pivot irrigation system located in the southeast quarter of Section 11-9-39 and authorized service of the notice by the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office.
The meeting recessed briefly from 9:56 to 9:59 a.m. before resuming. Commissioners later voted to adjourn at 10:32 a.m.
The next regular meeting of the Perkins County Board of Commissioners is scheduled for May 4 at 8:30 a.m. at the Perkins County Courthouse in Grant.
