Readers vote top stories of 2017 Hatch’s scooter and Johnson

The Grant Tribune staff asked readers to vote for their top stories of 2017.

Receiving the most votes in the top news/feature story was PC Elementary students raising funds for an electric scooter for Hatch’s Super Foods.

In March, K-6 students participated in Jump Rope For Heart, a national education and fundraising event sponsored by the American Heart Association.

The event raised around $6,000. From that total, an electric scooter was purchased for Hatch’s Super Foods, $1,100 was donated to the AHA and the remaining funds were used in the school for the students.

Coming in close behind were PC Elementary students hosting a pancake feed and raising $4,000 to send three local veterans on the Vietnam Veterans Flight and Jana Turner of Grant donating her liver to stranger Lori Rainwater of Colorado.

Receiving the most votes in the school activity/sports category was Charles Johnson taking first place in the Nebraska District No. 3 Congressional Art Contest.

Johnson’s drawing, Sophie, will hang in the US Capital in Washington D.C. for the remainder of the 2017-18 school year. Congressional Representative Adrian Smith visited PCS to congratulate Johnson, a PCS junior, and Johnson and his family flew to Washington D.C. for a reception with Rep. Smith in June.
