Work will begin next week on replacing the three railroad crossings at the south end of Central Ave. Most of the concrete approach panels and ties for the project are already on-site.

Replacement of RR crossings starting

Detour of Hwy. 61 traffic planned

Through traffic on Central Avenue/Hwy. 61 will be closed in both directions when work begins on the railroad crossings at the south end of Central Avenue Nov. 4.

All three crossings will be replaced during the project projected to take six to 10 working days.

The closure will also result in detours for traffic on Highway 61 through Grant.

Kelly Doyle, with the District 7 Dept. of Roads office in McCook, said the closure will require a detour for traffic on North Hwy. 61.

Northbound traffic on Hwy. 61 will be re-routed east on Hwy. 23 to Wallace, north on Hwy. 25 to I-80.

Southbound traffic on Hwy. 61 will be re-routed on I-80 east to Sutherland, north on Hwy. 25 to Wallace then back west to the Hwy. 6/23 junction east of Grant.

Hwy. 61 from Ogallala to Grant will remain open as normal. Doyle said only through traffic on Hwy. 61 is being re-routed.

He noted they do not take highway detour traffic on to local city streets, keeping them on the highway system instead.

The Logan Street railroad crossing is not slated for work and will remain open to local traffic as well as crossings east and west of Grant.

R&S Track Maintenance Inc. of Columbus is completing the work for NKC Railroad.

Chuck Phillips, foreman for the project, said the existing concrete approach plates will be removed, along with the track and ballast.

He said they will install new ballast, ties and track, along with new concrete approach plates on all three of the track crossings.

New asphalt will also be put down on both sides of the crossings. A different contractor will install the asphalt.
