Runborn returns to Grant

Steve Sousek will is preparing to depart on this year’s Runborn journey, and he has placed Grant on his travel map once again.

Sousek’s mission is “to fuse my love of running with my passion for the pro-life movement, supporting both unborn children and women in crisis.”

This year’s race across Nebraska will begin Sunday, June 27 in Lyman and will end in Nebraska City Thursday, July 1.

He won’t just be traveling on foot this year, however, as he has planned out swimming, biking and running routes across the state.

Because he will be turning 55 this year, Sousek wanted to do something themed, with fives. He considered several options to play around with the theme, and after some thought he came up with doing five Ironman Triathlons in five days.

Sousesk will reach Grant at the end of his first day, June 27, running into town on highway 61 from Ogallala. He will spend the night in Grant, and the next morning he plans to start a 2.4 mile swim at the swimming pool at 5:30 a.m. He will then bike out of town heading east on highway 23 passing by Madrid, Elsie and Wallace on the way to his next overnight stop.

He wanted to include Grant again this year because of the “wonderful welcome” he received when he ran through the town last year on his inaugural Runborn journey. Sousek will not, however, have any extra stops on his way through Grant this year like he did in 2020.

Sousek said he is a little nervous, particularly about the swimming portion, since he only recently learned to swim and has never done any swimming events before.

Sousek will travel a total of 703 miles during his five-day journey, making it a compilation of five Ironman Triathlons. One Ironman is  2.4 miles of swimming, 112 miles of biking, and 26.2 miles of running.

His donation goal this year is $55,000 after raising $40,992.36 last year. Donations will go to St. Gianna Women’s Homes and the Women’s Care Center in Lincoln, Nebraska.

He is hoping to take Runborn through Grant again next year, and he already has some ideas in mind for changes to make to the charity run next year.
