Dirt work is underway at the Scoular site north of Grant in preparation for additional storage being built.

Scoular expanding receiving/storage site north of Grant

Scrapers, dozers and excavators have started the initial dirt work for an expansion project at Scoular’s grain receiving and storage facility nine miles north of Grant on off Road 769.

Regier Land Improvement started work on the site that will include a new two million bushel storage building, two 330,000-bushel grain bins and two additional truck dump pits.

That will bring enclosed storage to more than six 6 millions bushels.

Scoular applied for a conditional use permit from the county in early April. Following public hearings with the county planning commission and with county commissioners May 18, commissioners approved the permit on a 3-0 vote.

There was no public input or opposition at the final public hearing in front of the commissioners.

Zoning Commissioner Bob Tatum said the only real concern brought to their attention was the type of fans used at the site. He said the company will be using fans with silencers to reduce noise. Typically, fan use is needed for about a three-month period after harvest.

Rick Matousek with Scoular in Venango, told the commissioners the company has reached a point where business has outgrown the site.

The addition of more storage and dump pits will improve the producer experience at harvest time.

He said they faced a situation where they were having to haul grain out of the facility to create room as farmers were bringing it in.

By increasing the available storage on site, he said truck traffic out of the facility during harvest will go down significantly.

Last year, he said 1,400 loads were hauled out of the facility while producers were delivering corn.

The two new bins will allow the company to accept soybeans at the site for the first time.

He said they plan to use their ground storage if needed. Mother Nature will decide that, he said, but they will have it ready if needed.

The dirt work includes enlarging the on-site drainage pond.
