Sheriff’s Office to conduct ordinance sweeps
Sheriff James D. Brueggeman announced this week his office will begin ordinance compliance sweeps in the City of Grant and Villages of Elsie, Madrid, and Venango.
Starting July 1, Brueggeman said his office will begin inspections in each community to ensure ordinance compliance.
The sweeps slated to be conducted are being made in conjunction with the formal requests of the governing bodies of the towns.
The interlocal law enforcement agreements the county has with these municipalities include enforcement of ordinances that are of a law enforcement nature.
Perkins County Sheriff’s Office will be verifying that residences, unattached structures, yards, and vehicles are in compliance with city and village code standard.
Brueggeman said the goal of the ordinance enforcement sweeps is to ensure the safety and welfare of residents in each municipality by enforcing existing ordinances in both residential and business districts.
The Perkins County Sheriff’s Office will act as the municipal law enforcement officer and will be addressing the following violations and issues in each community:
• Accumulation of garbage defined as trash/waste.
• Appliances in yards.
• Abandoned, disrepair, and inoperative vehicles and vehicles parts.
• Unlicensed vehicles and trailers.
• Vehicle parking.
When addressing ordinance violations, the sheriff said all violators receive due process.
Owners of properties in violation of local ordinances will initially receive a written warning requesting the property be brought in compliance within the allotted number of days.
Properties found to violate local laws after the allotted corrective action period passes will receive a citation.
The Perkins County Sheriff’s Office will return all citations to the governing body and its prosecuting attorney for further action.
City and village residents may pick up copies of the specific city and village ordinances enforced during the sweep from the city or village hall in each community.
Brueggeman encourages all citizens to assess their property now for any ordinance violations and bring their property into compliance before the ordinance enforcement sweep starts in July.
