Styskal served library board for 35 years

Brenda Styskal of Grant recently left the board, after serving since December of 1987.

She has had a love of reading and libraries since childhood.

“Before I moved to Grant as a new bride in 1987, I lived in many different towns across the state of Nebraska,” she said. “Each location we moved to we would immediately seek out the closest library. We saw libraries as magical places and I still feel that way to this day.”

The librarian at the time Styskal was appointed to the board was Fern Benge, whom she had befriended. “I was so excited that I got to be part of something so special,” she said, when her appointment to the board was approved.

Styskal has witnessed and helped facilitate changes to the library such as the move from its original location on Central Ave. to its current location; the hiring of librarian Sally Borowski and current librarian Robin Quinn, and expansion of services such as automation, the addition of the Makerspace and book bike.

“The collection has grown so much in quality and quantity in the past 35 years and I feel so happy to have been a small part of it,” Styskal said. “I love that we can now check out books on our personal devices through the library.” She hopes that everyone will take the time to check out the library, and experience the many offerings it has.
