Three more intersections slated for replacement

Anyone who has driven the streets of Grant knows there’s certain intersections in town that it’s best to take at a slow crawl.

The city has been targeting those intersections for replacement and the dips on three more will go away later this summer. 

On June 9, city council members approved a bid from CSC Construction of Grant for $180,470 to repair three intersections. 

The whole intersection at 5th Street ad Sherman Avenue will be completely replaced. 

Half of two other intersections will also be replaced—both on Garfield Avenue at 5th and 6th Streets. 

City Superintendent Edward Dunn said CSC’s bid came in nearly $90,000 less than the engineer’s estimate.

Only one other bid was received, which came from Myers Construction of Broken Bow at $257,169.

Dunn said the construction window will begin after Aug. 1 with completion no later than Oct. 31.

Shelco Paving of Paxton will also be doing street patching again this summer at a cost of just under $30,000.

The city has been steadily making street improvements and repairs. 

Last summer, CSC Construction replaced the asphalt street on 5th Street between Central Avenue and Lincoln Avenue with a new concrete street. 

One-half cent of the city sales tax  is allocated to fund street repairs.

In other action, the council approved two resolutions relating to the summer opening of the pool.

One requires a waiver from anyone using the pool, acknowledging the risk of exposure to COVID-19. A parent or guardian is required to sign the waiver for their children. 

The second resolution waived admission to the pool for the summer. 

Previous action by the council allowed the pool to open after June 15. 

Dunn said the opening has been delayed to Monday, June 22 due to the necessary replacement of the chlorinator.

Council members also approved a non-exclusive, 10-year cable TV franchise agreement with Great Plains Cable Television, LLC.
