In the midst of chaos during an outbreak of fires and storms on Thursday afternoon, July 6, Perkins County Sheriff’s Office responded to a camper trailer on its side along Highway 23.

Sheriff Jim Brueggeman said Kurt Beidler of Faulkton, South Dakota drove into what he described as a wall of rain. Straight-line winds caused the 2014 Dodge Ram pickup and 2010 Heartland fifth-wheel trailer, both owned by Jesse Warren of Faulkton, to slip from the westbound lane of Highway 23 approximately two miles east of Grant.

The trailer began to tip over, causing the fifth wheel hitch pins to break and disconnecting the trailer from the pickup. It overturned and landed on the driver’s side of the south ditch, causing major damage. The pickup suffered damage estimated at $4,000 to the driver’s side bedrail of the cargo box.

PCSO deputies directed traffic while waiting for MCM Truck Repair of Ogallala to turn over and move the trailer.
