Tribune places second in NPA newspaper contest

The Grant Tribune-Sentinel finished second in its division in the Nebraska Press Association’s 2017 Better Newspaper Contest. 

The awards were announced at the conclusion of the association’s annual convention on Saturday, April 22, held in Lincoln this year. 

The Tribune-Sentinel competes against other Nebraska newspapers with circulations from 860-1,499. Entries were judged by members of the Kansas Newspaper Association.

The Tribune won five first place awards, eight second place awards and two third place awards to finish runner-up behind The Chadron Record. The North Bend Eagle placed third. 

The Tribune won the Division B prize in 2015 and 2016. 

This year’s winner of the Loral Johnson Community Newspaper Sweepstakes Award went to the Aurora News Register.

Tribune co-publisher Russ Pankonin expressed his appreciation to the Tribune’s staff. 

“They are constantly striving to serve Grant and the Perkins County communities and it’s gratifying to see those efforts recognized by their peers,” he said.

Two other Johnson Publications newspapers earned awards in the contest as well. 

The Wauneta Breeze won seven awards in addition to the Omaha World Herald’s Service to Community and Agriculture awards.

The Imperial Republican won 10 awards.

Third Place: Front Page; Best Use of Social Media, Brooke Pankonin.
