Veterans honored through photos

Photographer Merle Nordyke of Ogallala has taken his interest in portrait photography as an opportunity to honor local veterans in Keith, Arthur and Perkins Counties.

U.S. military veterans who served from 1940-1975 are the key subjects of Nordyke’s portrait undertaking.

The portraits taken of each veteran will be used in the Veterans Portrait Project at the Petrified Wood Gallery in Ogallala.

The portraits of each veteran are taken on a black background in casual clothing. Nordyke asked each veteran to dress comfortably in order to “just feel like themselves and be easily recognized.”

Each 5x7 photo will be displayed in an 8x10 photo mat with the subject’s name, county, branch and date and location served.

“The photos are beautiful and really capture each individual,” stated Perkins County Veterans Services Officer Stephanie Larson.

“What he is doing is such a great way to honor our county’s heroes in a respectful and timeless way.  His attention to detail and ability to capture the veterans in a very natural way showcases his impeccable talent,” Larson said.

As a self-taught, amateur photographer, Nordyke’s focus for the last 11 years has been wildlife, namely insects. This portrait project is a new experience and learning opportunity for him.

“I’m fascinated with aged faces. They have so much character,” said Nordyke. “This is a way to help me learn and benefits the community.”
