Watkins family donates first fund for new Lions park shelter

At the October 28 meeting of the Grant Lions Club, the local Watkins Family made a $1,000 donation to the Lions.

This donation was given in appreciation of the Family since they have often used the old shelter for their annual reunions.

The previous shelter has been moved to the Perkins County Fairgrounds, since the new swimming pool will be located in the City Park where the old shelter existed.

The total cost of the new shelter construction is $29,999, to be done by the local Martin Building Systems (Dewey Martin owner).

It will be paid for by the City pledging $18,000, and $11,999 from the Lions. Additionally, the Lions will spend $3,380 to Potts Electrical for electrical additions. The projected completion date is May, 2021.

The new Lions shelter will be similar in size to the precious one (30 by 42 feet), and it will be located along 9th Street in the northwest part of the park.

The roof and gable panels will be metal, the structure and trusses wood, and the poles will be anchored to a concrete floor.

The previous shelter had poles set into the concrete, which resulted in a deterioration of the poles. The new structure will have ample buffet style serving bars on the north and south sections to enhance food serving.

The Lions very sincerely appreciate the Watkins Family for their generous support of this important addition to the City Park.

Theirs was the very first money to start a fund-raising effort to accomplish this project. Lion President Rendale Meyer encourages people to donate to this Lions Park Shelter fund-raiser. Contact any Grant Lions Club member.

Hundreds of local citizens will annually benefit from this service.
