Piles of snow take shape around Perkins County as streets are plowed after the severe winter storm that hit this past weekend.

Winter storm hits Perkins County

Perkins County and nearly all of Nebraska were impacted by a severe winter storm this week that shut down much of the county.

The National Weather Service in North Platte had reports of up to 13 inches of snow in the county.

Perkins County Sheriff and Emergency Management Director Jim Brueggeman said it was difficult to distinguish how much snow was actually received due to high winds and snow drifts. He estimated eight to 13 inches, with the eastern side of Perkins getting the most.

Brueggeman said the brunt of the storm took place Sunday night, with poor visibility, icy roadways from freezing drizzle before the snow, and high winds with blowing snow.

People spent much of Monday, Jan. 22 plowing out buried vehicles from deep snow drifts.
