Doris was born near Wallace, Neb., the youngest of four children born to Herbert and Esther (Bond) Rowan. While Duane was overseas, Doris and Richard moved back to Wallace to live with her parents. When Duane was discharged from the Marines, the family moved to Holdrege, Neb., where Duane worked for the Nebraska Department of Roads. While living in Holdrege, sons Rodney and David were born. Doris stayed active in her sons’ lives, volunteering as a Boy Scout Den Mother and a Sunday School teacher.

In 1970, Duane’s job brought the family to McCook. Doris worked in nursing homes in Holdrege and McCook. She spent a total of 24 years working as a CNA. Doris also worked as a teacher’s aide in the special education program at McCook Public Schools.
