Michael Robert Sorensen was born Sept. 26, 1967, in Omaha, Neb., to Bonnie Kay (Bloom) and Robert Orville Sorensen. 

Mike grew up in Wheatland, Wyo., and graduated from Wheatland High School with the class of 1986. He continued his education at Chadron State College where he excelled in football and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Secondary Education in 1993 and later a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from Doane College in 2006. 

On July 31, 1993, Mike married Nancy Ruth Schnell in Las Vegas, Nev., and to this union two children were born: Bethany and Isaac. As teachers, Mike and Nancy lived in several communities in Wyoming and Nebraska including Big Piney, Ansley, Alliance, Leigh, Imperial, Grand Island, Grant and most recently Wauneta. 

Mike began his career in education at Big Piney High School in Wyoming as a teacher and a coach. The family moved to Nebraska in 1997 where Mike continued teaching and coaching at Alliance High School, along with Ansley High School and Leigh Community High School. In 2006 Mike joined the staff at Chase County Schools in Imperial as the 7-12 Principal and coach where he was employed for nine years. Mike would later become the athletic director at Grand Island Northwest Schools before moving back to the Grant/Imperial area to teach at Chase County again for two more years. Recently, Mike had started his first year at Wauneta-Palisade High School as the 7-12 principal, athletic director, transportation director and head boys’ basketball coach.

Mike was a member of the Nebraska State Association of Secondary School Principals and NCSA—Nebraska Council of School Administrators. 

Mike enjoyed lifting weights, fishing, reading, playing video games, watching sporting events, laughing and taking a nap. He especially loved spending time with his family.

Mike passed away Thursday, Aug. 4, 2022, at the Chase County Community Hospital, Imperial, Neb.. He was 54 years of age.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents Robert Orville and Bonnie Kay Sorensen.

Survivors include wife Nancy of Wauneta; daughter Bethany Malmkar and husband Alex of Grant, Neb.; son Isaac Sorensen of Lincoln, Neb.; grandchildren Brooke, Hannah and Jett Malmkar; and sister Michelle George and husband Tom of Henderson, Nev.

Funeral services for Mike were held Saturday, Aug. 13, at the Imperial Berean Church with Pastor Matt Maxwell officiating.

Visitation was held Friday, August 12 at Liewer Funeral Home in Imperial.

Memorials, in Mike’s memory, have been suggested to the Sorensen family for a future designation.
