With the Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA) announcing another confirmed case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in a backyard flock in Knox County, the number of cases of HPAI in the state rose to 14 for 2022, which has resulted in the elimination of more than 6 million birds in just Nebraska, according the United State Department of Agriculture.

The loss of laying hens in Nebraska and across the country because of Avian Flu, coupled with the rise in inflation in general, have caused consumers to see a steady increase in the cost of eggs this year. The average cost of a dozen eggs in Nebraska is $3.50 according to a survey of grocery stores in the area. That is up from an average of $1.60 a dozen in December 2021.

Some people are finding a way around the increasing price, however, by purchasing and raising their own birds, including here in Perkins County.
