Tribune-Sentinel earns seven awards in newspaper contest

The Grant Tribune-Sentinel won seven awards this past weekend at the Nebraska Press Association’s 2023 Better Newspaper Contest. This included Runner-Up in the General Excellence category for Class C. The General Excellence award is the overall rating of all aspects of the newspaper. Earning first place for General Excellence in Class C was another High Plains News newspaper, The Imperial Republican.
The awards were announced at the conclusion of the NPA’s annual convention Saturday night, held this year in Lincoln. The NPA also celebrated its 150th anniversary this year.
The Tribune-Sentinel competed against other Nebraska newspapers with similar circulation. This year’s entries were judged by members of the West Virginia Press Association.
Tribune-Sentinel Awards
The Tribune won three first place awards, three second place awards and one third place award.
Results of the Tribune’s awards are as follows:
First Place: Sport’s Feature Photo, “XC Runners Share a Joke”—Diane Stamm; In-Depth News Writing, “Special Elk Season”—Becky Uehling; and Editorial Page—Becky Uehling and Shari Friedel.
Second Place: Sports Feature Writing, “Respect Fuels XC Competitors”—Diane Stamm; Feature Photo, “Look, Mom...He Likes Me!”—Becky Uehling; and General Excellence, overall rating of all aspects of newspaper—Becky Uehling, Shari Friedel and Diane Stamm.
Third place: Breaking News Writing, “Elsie Fire”—Becky Uehling.
Republican Awards
Results of the Imperial Republican, which came home with 19 awards, included:
Special Awards: News Photo of the Year—Jan Schultz; 2nd Place—Class C Sweepstakes (second highest award point total)
First Place: General Excellence—Overall rating of all aspects of newspaper; Photo Page–Diane Stamm; Personal Column—Jan Schultz; Sports Action Photo—Diane Stamm; Ag Advertisement—Samie Johnson.
