Injuries, illnesses take toll on PCS girls

This year’s SPVA tournament will not be one the Perkins County girls’ basketball team remembers fondly.
Faced with personnel shortages, the Plainsmen lost both their tournament games.
Hershey
PCS, seeded fifth, was down to five varsity players due to injuries and illnesses when it took the court against Hershey Jan. 17.
Meghan Bishop scored all five of her team-high points in the first quarter. Ava Reese and Meredith Gloy added field goals, but nine points by PCS was no match for the 23 scored by Hershey.
Charis Goodall and Hallie Fisher hit baskets for the Plainsmen in the second quarter. PCS also made 3-6 from the free throw line and trailed 16-37 at halftime.
Emily Cornelius made Perkins County’s only third quarter points and the Plainsmen wrapped up the game with fourth quarter baskets from Reese, Fisher and Libby Cole.
Reese, Gloy and Fisher each scored four points in the 24-64 loss. Cole had a team-high six rebounds.

Kimball
As the highest seed to lose in the first round, PCS didn’t have a game Thursday, but traveled to North Platte Saturday to take on Kimball in the fifth place game of the tournament.
Cole hit the Plainsmen’s first two baskets of the game. PCS trailed 5-10 after the first quarter.
Perkins County fought its way back into the game in the second quarter. Bishop started off PCS scoring with a three pointer. A basket by Cole was followed by two from Fisher. Cole wrapped up scoring with a three pointer and sent the teams to their locker rooms tied at 17.
Kimball took firm control of the game in the third quarter. With only two field goals by Cole and two free throws by Potts, PCS was outscored 6-16 and trailed 23-33.
Bishop started the fourth quarter off with a three pointer and a two pointer, but those would be the Plainsmen’s final field goals of the game. Four free throws finished off the 32-41 loss.
Cole led PCS with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Potts pulled down 10 rebounds in her return from an ankle injury.

Up next
PCS, now 7-8, will hit the road for Holyoke, Colorado Tuesday and follow it up with a trip to Sedwick County, Colorado Thursday.
PCS Head Coach Deanne Bishop said two weekday road trips against tough opponents is a tall task the week after the  conference tournament.
Holyoke is 11-1 and Sedgwick County is 7-1.
“That said, we welcome the challenge and the opportunity to get better,” Bishop said.
