PCS boys third, girls fourth at Sutherland Invite

Although the start of the meet was pushed back a couple of hours in hopes of a warmer start, the Sutherland Track Invite on Thursday, April 14 still greeted the Perkins County teams with windy, cold temps.
This, however, did not deter the Plainsmen from earning 40 personal records and three first-place finishes during the day. But, most importantly, the teams were able to put another meet under their belts in preps for SPVA next week, according to Head Coach Shayne Hite.
“I’m hoping soon that we can get a full meet in with (both) prelim(inaries) and finals. That would help the kids get in shape,” Hite said. “We did as well as could be expected with the shortened schedule (at Sutherland).”
Because of the meet’s late start, Hite had to scratch some of the PC athletes out of events, dampening the depth for the Plainsmen and their chances at team titles. But, Hite said, he overall was pleased with team standings.
For the boys, Chase County took first and North Platte St. Pats second with scores of 107 and 92 respectively. Chase County girls also took first and North Platte St. Pats girls second with scores of 191 and 86 respectively. Perkins County boys came in at third with a score of 74, and Perkins County girls came in at fourth with a score of 52, behind Sutherland with a score of 73.
Other highlights for the day include first-place finishes for Colton Pouk in the 800 meter run, Casey Hanson in the long jump and Blake Garner in the triple jump.
Katie Cook broke the Perkins County School’s long jump record with a jump of 15’4”. Hite said now Cook and her older brother, Kiffen, a 2017 PCS graduate, both hold the Perkins County School’s long jump records for boys and girls. However, Hanson’s first place jump of 21’2.50” Thursday was only 0.5” off from the boys record, he said.
Mason McGreer’s 3,200-meter run to a second place finish with a time of 10:30.08 was also exciting to watch, Hite said.
“(Mason was) only six seconds off from breaking our school’s record in the event,” Hite said.
The Plainsmen will be in Imperial on Tuesday, at Hershey on Saturday, and back at home next Friday, April 29 to host SPVA.
