Charis Goodell leads a pack down the straight in the 1,600-meter run at Benkelman. The race was the longest one of the day as organizers chose not to have the 3,200-meter run.

PCS boys win DCS Invite, girls third

The Perkins County track teams shook off 12 days worth of rust last week at the Dundy County Stratton Invite.
After a nice day for the PCS Pre-Season Meet March 24, the school postponed the E. Lee Todd Invite April 1 in anticipation of bad weather.
The team gritted their teeth and took to the track on the windy April 5 in Benkelman.
Head Coach Shayne Hite said he was very proud of both teams for the way they performed.
“This was a big test of our mental toughness early in the season with the colder weather and strong winds,” Hite said, adding he would say, for the majority of the meet, PCS athletes passed this test.
The Plainsmen boys’ team won the meet 106-101 over DCS and Cambridge, which tied for second.
“We did not go down there with the intent to win so that was a bonus,” Hite said.
Claiming meet wins were Mason McGreer, 1,600-meter run; Casey Hanson, long jump; and Blake Garner, triple jump.
The 3,200-meter relay team, McGreer, Tony Lyon, Erik Snyder and Colton Pouk, also took first place.
The girls’ team placed third behind Cambridge and Southwest.
Charis Goodell won the 1,600-meter run and Kailee Potts won both hurdles races.
Libby Cole, Katie Cook, Meredith Gloy and Potts combined to win the 1,600-meter relay.
Hite said coaches are still looking for the right combination for events.
“We were trying some different people on relays and not so much in the open events. We let some of the younger kids compete in more of the open events,” Hite said.
Meet organizers cut pole vault, high jump and the 3,200-meter run out of the schedule because of the weather, which also contributed to coaches’ decisions of who would do what event.
PCS will be coming off a eight-day break when it heads to Sutherland Thursday.
Hite said the Plainsmen need to keep working on getting into shape.
“We are not there yet, especially with not having any hot workout days,” he said.
