PCS takes down Creek Valley, Alliance

The Perkins County boys’ basketball team is on a roll, but the Plainsmen have one more hurdle before they can focus on the postseason.
Creek Valley
Last Tuesday PCS steamrolled Creek Valley (1-19) on the Storm’s home court.
Hunter Garner nailed three first quarter 3s and, with 11 points, outscored Creek Valley by himself. Triston Hite and Blake Garner made 3s of their own over the game’s first eight minutes. Behind their efforts, PCS held a 21-6 lead.
Perkins County’s offense continued to click in the second quarter. H. Garner, Jeb Kohl and Jackson Wykert continued the barrage from behind the arc. Hayden Foster scored six points and, with another nice defensive effort, PCS headed to the locker room with a 42-15 lead.
The Plainsmen put in a stellar effort on the defensive end in the third quarter. Creek Valley’s entire offensive effort was limited to one free throw.
As a steady rotation of Plainsmen came into the game, PCS put 20 points on the board.
The Plainsmen’s starters didn’t see the floor in the fourth quarter as eight other players finished off the 68-22 win.
Twelve Plainsmen scored in the game, led by H. Garner’s 20 points.

Alliance
PCS had a taller task Thursday at Class B Alliance (6-15).
Foster powered the Plainsmen offense in the first quarter. Foster scored Perkins County’s first 12 points in the game.
H. Garner broke his streak with back-to-back three pointers. On the defensive end, PCS only gave up 10-points between three Alliance players.
Leading 22-10, PCS slowed down offensively in the second quarter. Hite and B. Garner each made a three pointer, totaling six of Perkins County’s 10 second quarter points.
The Bulldogs cut into their deficit with an 11-point quarter, but PCS still led 33-21 at halftime.
Although Perkins County didn’t blow the doors off Alliance as it did in the first quarter, PCS was able to maintain its lead in the second half.
Casey Hanson started the half with back-to-back baskets. B. Garner, Kohl and H. Garner chipped in baskets during the quarter, as well.
Alliance spread the ball around in the quarter with six players scoring. None of them made more than one field and PCS carried a 47-34 lead into the final stanza.
Alliance made the Plainsmen earn the win at the charity stripe.
Foster made two baskets but the rest of Perkins County’s 12 points came from the free throw line.
B. Garner made 5-6 free throws and H. Garner 2-2 free throws as the game wore on to give the Plainsmen a 59-48 win.
Foster led three Plainsmen in double figures, scoring 22 points.
H. Garner scored 13 points and B. Garner added 12 points for PCS.

Up next
PCS (14-7) will head to 16-3 Potter-Dix to wrap up the regular season Friday.
“We are looking forward to the game with them and are excited to see how the boys respond after a really high effort game against Alliance,” PCS Assistant Coach Corey Potts said.
“We know Potter-Dix is a tough team so we are going to have to play with the same effort as Alliance game and make our shots as a team,” Potts added.
Subdistricts will be played next week in Bridgeport.
The Plainsmen will be the third seed and face Bayard (15-9) in the first round.
Bridgeport took the top seed in the subdistrict. PCS split with the Bulldogs, winning 55-45 Dec. 3 but losing 55-69 Jan. 21.
Chase County (8-15) and Morrill (11-9) will play Monday to see who will play Bridgeport Tuesday.
Subdistrict finals will be played Thursday.
Potts said it would have been nice to earn the top seed and play at home, PCS needs to be ready no matter the location.
“The boys saw what they are capable of against Alliance when they give 100% effort and play as a team, great things happen,” Potts said.
