Perkins County splits games with Colorado schools

The Perkins County boys’ basketball team split road games with vastly different Colorado schools last week, losing to Holyoke Tuesday and beating Sedgwick County Thursday.

Holyoke (9-5) is ranked 10th in Colorado’s Class 2A.
Out of the Dragons’ six first quarter field goals, three were three pointers. Triston Hite had a three pointer of his own and Hayden Foster scored six points, but PCS trailed 13-18 at the end of the first quarter.
Two players accounted for 20 of Holyoke’s 24 points in the second quarter. Hite added two more 3s for the Plainsmen, while Hunter Garner, Blake Garner and Foster chipped in nine more points. The Plainsmen trailed 26-42 at halftime.
PCS fell further behind in the third quarter as Holyoke continued to stay hot from behind the arc. Foster scored 11 of Perkins County’s 13 points in the quarter.
Trailing 39-61 to start the final stanza, PCS cut into the Holyoke advantage. Seven Plainsmen scored in the fourth quarter, led by H. Garner’s seven points. PCS made 6-10 free throws as time wound down in the 56-71 loss.
Foster led PCS with 23 points. H. Garner and Hite each scored nine points.
H. Garner pulled down a team-high eight rebounds and dished out four assists.
Holyoke made 11 three pointers in the game.

    The PCS defense put the clamps on Sedgwick County right from the start.
The Plainsmen only allowed four first half baskets and sprinted out to a 29-8 lead at halftime. H. Garner outscored Sedgwick County by himself in the first half thanks to four three pointers. Four Plainsmen scored at least four points in the first half.
H. Garner and Hite combined to make five 3s in the third quarter to push Perkins County’s advantage to 59-12.
With the clock running throughout the fourth quarter, PCS finished off the 60-16 win.
H. Garner led PCS with 21 points and Hite added 18.
PCS rattled in 10 three pointers.

Saturday Perkins County will host South Platte (4-10).
The regular season will end with three-straight road games, Feb. 8 at Creek Valley (1-15), Feb. 10 at Alliance (5-12) and Feb. 19 at Potter-Dix (13-2). The Potter-Dix game will not count towards Perkins County’s final points total. Subdistricts will begin  Feb. 21.
