Because of a lack of quorum, the Grant City Council meeting scheduled on Monday, Sept. 26, was moved to Tuesday, Sept. 27. During the meeting the council made strides in finalizing the license and management agreement between the city and the newly formed Legion Ball Association, and in related business, filled the last open position on the Park and Rec Committee.

To be sponsored by the Grant American Legion Post 40, the new Legion Baseball Team will begin its season in 2023 under the direction of Chris Fryzek and John Goodell.

During the meeting, the Grant City Council, City Superintendent Edward Dunn, and the city’s legal counsel Tawna Holmstedt, worked through the eight page agreement, which members of Post 40 had already reviewed and proposed changes to. Also on hand for the discussion was Fryzek.

The agreement lays out the many expectations between the two entities. Such expectations dealt with included responsibilities of each entity pertaining to the upkeep and preparation of the ball fields; scheduling of games and practices; required supervision of Legion events; parameters for usage of the perimeter fence for signage; insurance requirements; among other details.

After discussion was held on several pieces of the agreement, the council asked Holmstedt to make the changes to the lease with the council moving the item to the next agenda.

Related to the ball program, the council filled the final position that was open on the Parks and Rec Committee with approval of the appointment of Shelby Mayer by Mayor Lisa Schmitt.

With Schmitt still absent from meetings because of work related issues, the council took under advisement an email from Schmitt appointing Mayer. The council unanimously approved the appointment.

Mayer joins committee members Melissa Sauder, Nicole Tjaden and Jerrad Buller, who were appointed last meeting.
