Guild to give away one-of-a-kind quilt at fair

With an increasing number of quilts being entered at the Perkins County Fair, and a decrease of floral exhibits, The Quilted Leaf Quilt Guild was asked by the Flower Club if they wanted to use the Flower Building on the north east end of the fairgrounds, instead of the 4-H building. It was decided it would be a great space for the guilds quilts and displays at Fair

Guild members are planning to hang the quilts, create displays of antique sewing items and demonstrate quilting methods.

The building will be open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday July 19th to Friday, July 22nd, and all day Saturday until the display is removed before 6:30 p.m.

Hoping to draw more people to view the quilts, members have made a quilt to give away to one lucky winner. Each participating member created a unique , one-of-a-kind block of a house. Among them are an old fashioned outhouse, church, school, one and two-story homes with trees, animals and people to give it life.  It has been named “A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood”.  “You have to see this quilt to appreciate it.  It is one of those that each time you look at it, you see something you missed the first time,” said quilt guild member Sally Shiers.

The criteria for the House block was:  must be a finished size of 10 1/2”, use the pattern provided or create your own, use any method to get the desired result (including turned or raw edge applique and traditional or paper piecing) and save 3D embellishments, such as buttons or sparkly crystals, for after the machine quilting is done.

Twenty blocks were created, and two members put them together into a quilt top, framing each house with three strips of fabrics that resemble a sidewalk lined with grass, and a cornerstone of flowers at each intersection. Two borders were added to finish it.

One of the members then quilted it on her long arm Qquilting machine and applied the binding around all four edges. All members signed the identification tag stitched onto the back.

Fair goers who visit the “Quilt Barn” will be able to place their name in the bowl for a drawing on Saturday at the Award Ceremony after the parade. There is no fee for the drawing, but the guild asks that people only enter once. Guild members are not allowed to enter.

The guild invites everyone to come and see them in the new quilt building and hopes to see everyone at the fair, Shiers said.
