Perkins County Commissioners Approve New Road Hire, Renew NRIN Agreement
The Perkins County Board of Commissioners convened for its regular meeting on Monday, May 5, at 8:30 a.m. in the Perkins County Courthouse. Commissioners Steve Tucker, Darin Robertson, and Mark Bottom were present, along with County Attorney Richard Roberts and Clerk James Brueggeman.
After calling the meeting to order and confirming public notice and compliance with the Open Meetings Act, the board approved minutes from the April 21 meeting and adopted the meeting agenda by unanimous roll call votes.
Financial Actions
The board reviewed and approved claims across multiple county departments, including $67,314.80 in employee salaries. Other significant disbursements included:
Gene Steffy Chrysler Jeep Dodge: $41,427 for a vehicle purchase,
Kidwell: $38,872.50 for services or equipment,
Carrier Corporation: $250,000 from the Inheritance Fund.
Public Forum &
Correspondence
The public forum ran from 8:40 to 9:25 a.m. with no comments submitted. Commissioners received various correspondence, including:
A Tax Increment Financing (TIF) proposal from the Grant Community Redevelopment Authority for 204 Hancock Avenue,
A request from Premier Bank to be designated a depository for county funds,
An anonymous letter from a veteran’s family member concerning the former Veterans Service Officer.
Personnel and Contracts
Under unfinished business, Commissioner Bottom delayed a hire for District 2 seasonal road help. However, Dennis Steinwart was approved unanimously as a part-time hire for Road District 1.
The board also approved two key agreements:
A MIPS Residential Assessment Contract, presented by Deputy County Assessor Regina Berry,
Resolution 2025-8, renewing Perkins County’s agreement with the Nebraska Regional Interoperability Network (NRIN), as recommended by Emergency Manager/911 Administrator James Brueggeman.
Employee Benefits and Department Updates
A proposal from Aflac to offer group dental insurance at the employee’s expense was discussed. No immediate action was taken; the board suggested polling employees for interest before considering the proposal further.
Updates were provided by Sheriff Jeffrey Miller, A-EMT Travis Ogg, and Clerk James Brueggeman. The commissioners also acknowledged a District Court fee report submitted by Clerk Kathy Woodmancy and discussed the need for a temporary substitute bus driver for Public Transit in June.
Chairman Tucker relayed updates from Highway/Weed Superintendent Steve Leimer, who was not in attendance.
Upcoming Meetings
The board acknowledged an upcoming Planning and Zoning meeting scheduled for May 12, 2025, at 7:00 p.m. and confirmed their next regular session will be held Monday, May 19 at 8:30 a.m. at the courthouse.
The meeting adjourned at 9:31 a.m. following a motion by Commissioner Robertson, seconded by Commissioner Bottom.
