Perkins County TeamMates Coordinator Nicole Long is just finishing up a week in Lincoln at a TeamMates conference preparing her for the year to come with both familiar faces and a new crop of mentors and mentees at PCS.

Long is also looking for mentors to “just be there” for a new group of sixth graders at PCS who will be entering the program, as well as some older students.

“I will be looking for both women and men mentors for the sixth grade mentees, as well as some older mentees who lost their mentors (due to job conflicts or moving),” Long said.

Mentors are trustworthy adults who commit to meeting with their assigned mentee once a week.

“Usually, the pairs meet during the student’s lunchtime. Meetings are always held at school,” Long said.

TeamMates believes that all children can benefit from a positive adult relationship.

Those who are interested in being a mentor can apply online at teammates.org. The applicant is asked to provide four character references and TeamMates will perform a background check.

“If anyone is interested but has more questions, I encourage them to contact me by email, nicole.long@perkinscountyschools.org, or by phone, at 352-4735,” Long said.
