It was one step forward and one step back for the Perkins County School Board Monday night during its regular meeting when the board approved the contract for a new superintendent, and accepted the resignation from Elementary Principal Nancy Sorensen.

Superintendent

The board approved a contract with Mark Jolliffe to serve as the district’s new superintendent. Jolliffe is currently serving as the principal at Wichita High School in Wichita, Kan.

Jolliffe was chosen by the board from three candidates who were interviewed on Wednesday, Feb. 15. According to School Board President Chris Fryzek, the board felt Jolliffe was the best fit for Perkins County Schools out of the three qualified applicants.

Jolliffe, along with his wife Heidi, have been taking part in several activities in the community since being offered the position last week, including school activities and also the recent gala put on to raise money for a new elder care facility in the community.

“I am excited to be selected as the next superintendent of Perkins County Schools,” Jolliffe said Tuesday morning. “The community, staff and students have been exactly what we were looking for.”

Jolliffe said he is ready to learn the culture of the school system and how he can be a resource to all involved.

Sorensen Resignation

During Monday’s meeting the board also accepted Sorensen’s resignation with appreciation.

In her resignation letter, Sorensen stated she will be returning to the Wauneta area and accepting a position at Wauneta Public Schools.

Sorensen thanked the administrators, board and staff at the school for the support she has received, and specifically thanked Phillip Picquet for his mentorship.

The school will now be looking for two principals with Sorensen’s resignation, which joins the resignation of High School Principal Ben Jones that he submitted last month.
