Perkins County sophomore Kayton Brueggeman played in the two-day Class C state tournament.

Brueggeman competes at state golf

Kayton Brueggeman played in the Class C state golf meet as the first member of a Perkins County girls golf team to qualify in a decade.

The Oct.14 and 15 meet at the Lake Maloney course outside of North Platte had 94 girls competing. Brueggeman tied for 78th with a score of 226 (120, 106).

The girls golfed 18 holes each day, as opposed to a regular meet when they play 18 holes.

Coach Shawn Cole noted that while she was not one of the top scorers, “getting that experience will be huge.” He also said it was exciting when a coach can help their team members get to state.

Cole noted, however, that Brueggeman deserves the credit since she is the one who golfed her way to state.

The Perkins County girls golf team has been small in the past, with only two girls on the team five years ago, but this year’s team would have had five members had it not been for injuries and academic ineligibility.

Cole hopes the team will continue to grow in the future, so they can compete as a full team.

Brueggeman commented she did not do as well as she would have liked and was “kinda bummed,” but she also feels honored to be the first Lady Plainsmen to qualify for state in 10 years.

Brueggeman plans to continue golfing for Perkins County in future years, and hopes to make it to the state competition again in the future. As Cole mentioned, this year’s state experience will be helpful in that venture.
