Brueggeman qualifies for state golf

The Perkins County High School girls golf team competed at the C-5 districts in McCook on Oct. 8.

One of the girls, sophomore Kayton Bruegeman, scored well enough to qualify for the state meet.

She finished the 18-hole round in 7th place with a score of 116 (53, 63).

Brueggeman has been golfing for the school for two years, including this year.

Outside of school, however, she has been golfing since she was about eight years old.

She started golfing because her father was also a golfer. “It’s just something I’ve always wanted to do,” says Brueggeman.

When she realized she had made it to state, she was happy and excited as well as nervous at how soon the state meet was after districts.

“I wasn’t expecting it!” she said, regarding her thoughts on qualifying.

Brueggeman is the first competitor for Perkins County girls golf team to qualify for state since Jeannie Kuskie in 2009.

Practice rounds for state were on Sunday, and the state tournament was set for Monday and Tuesday.

The championship took place at Lake Maloney Golf Course in North Platte.

While Perkins County did not have enough members participate at the district meet to qualify as a team, there were two other girls who competed at districts. Kayla Reichenberg finished in 20th with a score of 139 (66, 73) and Emmerald Sims came in 32nd with a score of 142 (72, 83).
