Plainsmen play spoiler role in 66-58 win over DCS
The 17th touchdown of the night, scored with just 1.9 seconds left to play, decided the outcome of a wild one played at Dundy County Stratton Friday night.
After losing each of their last two contests on scores inside the final 30 seconds, the Perkins County Plainsmen got to play the spoiler this time.
With four minutes left in the game, the Plainsmen found themselves trailing the DCS Tigers 58-44.
Back-to-back touchdowns, with a three-and-out defensive stand sandwiched in between, put the Plainsmen right back in the game.
With 1:10 left in the game, quarterback Charles Johnson beat the Tiger defense to the corner of the end zone from four yards out. The line opened a hole for Alex Patrick for the crucial two-point conversion to tie the game 58-58.
The Plainsmen got a huge break on the ensuing kickoff.
Ever since the first quarter when DCS’ Phelan Sanford returned a kickoff for a 78-yard touchdown, Coach Lance Steffen went to the squib kick.
This time, the Tigers had trouble handling the kick and stepped out of bounds on their own 2.
After getting a first down at their own 16, the Tigers threw deep. But the only one deep enough to catch it was the Plainsmen’s Alex Patrick.
He returned the ball back to the DCS 33 and a late hit on the sidelines added another 15 yards, with 40 seconds left on the clock. After three incomplete passes, Steffen called on Michael Beck for a 35-yard field goal attempt. The kick had plenty of distance but was just outside the goal post.
