Plainsmen conclude season at state track

Five Perkins County athletes traveled to Omaha Thursday, May 17 to compete in Class C of the 2018 NSAA Track and Field Championships at Omaha Burke Stadium May 18-19. 

Sophomore Evan Sestak was the first to run for the Plainsmen, competing in the 110 hurdles on Friday afternoon. He placed sixth in his heat with a time 16.28 seconds. Winning the event in the Saturday afternoon finals was Phalen Sanford of Dundy County-Stratton with a time of 14.86.

Sophomore Alex Patrick ran the 200 preliminaries with a time of 23.44 to place seventh in the last event of the day on Friday. Dylan Kautz of Norfolk Catholic won the finals on Saturday with a time of 22 seconds even. 

The 800 kicked off Saturday’s running events in the rain with Junior Caden Waitley taking eighth in his section and 12th overall with a time of 2:05.78. Aubrey Fangmeier of Thayer Central ran 1:59.36 to take first in the event. 

The final event of the meet featured the Plainsmen running the 1600 meter relay ran by Senior Charles Johnson, Sestak, Junior Domonic Wendell and Patrick. Each ran a 400 with an overall time of 3:34.38 to place fourth in their heat and ninth overall, leaving them just over a half a second out of the medals. Dundy County-Stratton won with a time of 3:26.97.

Winning the overall meet for Class C boys was Hartington-Newcastle with 52 points. Runner-up went to Norfolk Catholic with 46 points.
