Wheat, pulse crop field tour June 19 at Stumpf Center

Pre-register by June 15 to attend the event

Maturing wheat fields mean the annual wheat field tour at the Henry J. Stumpf International Wheat Center in Grant isn’t far away.

The event will be held Tuesday, June 19 beginning with registration through 9 a.m., followed by sessions and plot tours through mid-afternoon.

In addition to the wheat tour, the center will also feature field plot research on field peas, chickpeas, irrigation research on pulse crops and winter canola and fallow replacement.

Strahinja Stepanovic, UNL cropping systems extension educator in Perkins, Chase and Dundy Counties, said this is a don’t-miss opportunity for farmers looking at rotational cropping options on dryland and irrigation.

Stepanovic said all of the plot tours will be conducted at the wheat center, located just east of Grant at 76025 Rd 329.

The morning plot tour from 9-11 a.m. will look at winter wheat varieties and research, fallow replacement, chickpea and field pea production, the pulse and canola irrigation research and cover crop options behind wheat.

Following a free lunch, speakers will address pulse crop production and marketing, cover crop management in western Nebraska and oats and peas seeding rates.

The afternoon will conclude with plot tours of industry partners of the wheat center, including Monsanto and Frenchman Valley.

Monsanto will share agronomic and variety trials info while FVC will address white wheat production for high yields and high protein content.

Pre-registration for the event is requested by Friday, June 15 by calling the  Perkins County Extension Office 308-352-4340; or by e-mail to sstepanovic2@unl.edu. There is no registration fee, lunch and refreshments will be provided.

Stepanovic said the Extension field days tours are made possible by sponsorship from the Sustainable Agriculture and Research Education (SARE) in Nebraska, the Nebraska Environmental Trust, and the pulse crops seed and processing industry.

Other field days being held in conjunction with the Grant field day include Callaway and North Platte on Monday, June 18, and Wednesday, June 20 at Alma, Blue Hill and Bladen.

A complete agenda and registration link to each event is available online at https://cropwatch.unl.edu/2018/winter-crop-field-days.
