Through the heavy dust, Doug Curtis pulls the grain cart up next to the combine harvesting Chris and Kim Copple’s wheat on Road 343 north of Elsie on Monday, July 9, when temperatures soared into the mid 90s in Perkins County.

Wheat harvest is in full swing in Perkins County. According to Jeff Bechard, vice president of grain at Frenchman Valley Coop, harvest is just about halfway complete. Test weights have averaged 60-plus per bushel with the protein average at 10-12 percent.
