Boys finish first at XC season opener
Perkins County cross country runners got a great start to their season with a first place boys finish at the season opener at the North Platte St. Pat’s Invite on Aug. 30.
The boys finished four seniors in the top 10 to surpass second place team Doniphan-Trumball by 23 points. Caden Waitley took the gold with a time of 18:16 with Jaden Dietlein following 10 seconds behind to claim silver. The duo took first and second at the same meet last year.
Coach Paula Wurst said the pair ran side by side the majority of the race, beating their closest competitor by over a minute.
“It was nice to see those two running so strong out in front,” she said.
Matthew Hahn had a time of 20:02 to take sixth and Jarin Tines came in 10 seconds later to take eighth.
Wurst noted she always hopes to see less than a two-minute gap between the first and fourth runners, and the top four runners accomplished this on Thursday.
Junior Caleb Lager was just out of the medals at 18th, and Junior Trye Hickey placed 21st in his inaugural race. Freshman Colton Pouk and Junior Evan Sestak placed 23rd and 28th respectively.
Senior Hailey Snyder finished 11th with a time of 24:23. PC doesn’t have enough girls to compete as a team this year.
Coach Paula Wurst said the team ran really well.
“It was hot and humid, and the heat took a toll on some of the runners, but everyone fought through and finished. I was super proud of everyone’s effort,” she said.
The team will travel to Imperial on Thursday, Sept. 6 for their second meet of the season at 3:30 p.m.
