Lady Plainsmen golfers win inaugural invite

Perkins County’s Lady Plainsmen won their inaugural invitational at Grant’s Pheasant Run golf course Thursday. Three other schools participated in the meet including Hershey, Southwest and Dundy County Stratton. 

The Lady Plainsmen finished 30 strokes in front of Hershey to claim the team title.

Kayton Brueggeman led the team, shooting a 55 on the front nine backed up by a 57  on the back to take the individual title by one stroke. 

Coach Rich Borman said the girls have really been focusing on improving their scores. They have been getting plenty of competition to hone their efforts. They began the season with three meets in eight days. 

They opened at Bayard Aug. 27 and Borman said all the girls improved their scores from last year’s Bayard meet. They followed that up with a Sept. 1 meet at Kimball and a Sept 3 meet at Chappell, hosted by Creek Valley.  Thursday’s meet was their first since the Creek Valley meet. 

This week, they resume action, going to Ogallala Tuesday and to Bridgeport Thursday.  They have one remaining meet at Dundy County Stratton  Sept. 30 before the C-5 districts in Ogallala’s Crandall Creek course.

At Kimball, Borman said the girls improved their scores compared to last year’s meet. Sarah Cockerill improved by 30 strokes over last year, he added. 

Brueggeman finished 10th at Kimball and the team improved by 64 strokes. 

At Creek Valley, the team shot a 487 to place fourth including a fourth place individual finish for Brueggeman with an even 100.

Kayla Reichenberg shot a 115, Emme Sims a 124 and Cockerill a 148.

The team score of 487 represented the first time in several years the girls have broken 500. Their 487 was 70 strokes better than last year’s team total at the same meet. 

Scoring for the Lady Plainsmen in their meet last week included Brueggeman with the 112, Reichenberg with a 62-61 for a 123, Sims with a 64-62 for a 126 and Cockerill with a 79-70 for a 149.
