Track teams get first taste of competition
Perkins County’s girls and boys track teams kicked off their season March 25 when the Plainsmen hosted a preseason meet with Chase County and South Platte.
Coach Shane Hite said the meet is a good way to get the kids some meet experience and performance marks, especially since there was no track season last year due to COVID-19.
He’s still remorseful about that, especially for last year’s seniors. He knows several athletes could have broken some school records but didn’t get the chance.
Losing last year’s season affected the continuity that a team brings in from the previous season. That’s meant having to build up some foundation and skills this season that the coaches normally wouldn’t have to do.
The preseason meet also allows the kids to try different events and see where they fit in before the meet season begins.
Hite said his team is far from being in shape at this point but that will change as the season progresses.
The season officially begins Thursday when the Plainsmen participate in the Ed Moore Invitational in Ogallala.
Hite said there will be a strong field at the meet and will provide a feel of where his teams stand at this point in the season.
During the preseason meet, no team scores were kept, no individual medals awarded and no preliminaries were held.
Rylee Huff and Kailee Potts paced the girls. Huff was second in both the long jump and triple jump while Potts took second in the 100 meter hurdles and the high jump.
On the boys side, Colton Pouk took first in both the 800 and 1,600.
The Plainsmen went 1-2 in the high jump with Hunter Garner taking first and Irvin Reyes in second. Reyes also took second in the 200.
In the long jump, Casey Hanson and Blake Garner took second and third. Hanson added a third in the 100.
In the triple jump, the Plainsmen went 2-3-4, lead by Triston Hite, Jeb Kohl and Hayden Foster.
