Independence Day celebration plans announced

Celebration will be in full swing on Saturday July 3 when the Perkins County Chamber hosts their annual Independence Day event at the Grant City Park.

The decision to hold the event on Saturday was made in hopes of allowing more time for travel for those coming from out of town to participate.

The fireworks show will go on Sunday evening, in true celebration of the meaning behind the show.

Saturday will kick off with the Fun Run sponsored by Image Total Fitness. Proceeds from this year’s run will go to benefit the Park and Rec. program in Grant.

Runners can register ahead of time online and find the link on Image Total Fitness’s Facebook page.

The race will begin at 7 a.m.

Following the run will be the Perkins County School Foundation’s breakfast fundraiser which is a free will donation. Breakfast is served from 7 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.

Image Total Fitness will host “Yoga in the Park” at 9 a.m. which will be followed by a sand volleyball game sponsored by First Insight Eyecare.

The Grant Cemetery Board will be serving a freewill donation hotdog lunch accompanied with chips and a root beer float from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m.

James Deaver of Ride Rite Garage will host a car show from 12-5 p.m.

Also from 12-5 p.m. will be bounce houses provided at no charge by Grant E-Free Church, who will also be handing out free water, popcorn and cotton candy.

The Perkins County FFA will host a corn hole tournament beginning at 1 p.m. with prizes for first second and third place. First place winners of the corn hole tournament will receive four Sawyer Brown concert tickets for the July 24 show at the Perkins County Fair. Second place will receive to Sawyer Brown tickets and third will take home a In & Out gift card.

If corn hole isn’t one’s game of choice, they could also choose to participate in Great Plains Communications’ Horseshoe Tournament at 1 p.m.

The City of Grant will be offering a day of free entry to the swimming pool from 1-5 p.m. on Saturday.

First Insight Eyecare is also holding their annual Rib cook-off and the judging is set to be held at 2 p.m.

Matt Chandler Smith with Orpheus Music & Sound will be present for the day providing musical entertainment.

Despite the rest of the festivities being held on Saturday, Grant Fire Chief Rick Dreiling and his crew felt it was important to keep the fireworks show on the evening of the Fourth of July in honor of the reason for the celebration. The fireworks show will be Sunday night at dusk at the Perkins County Fairgrounds. Donations for the fireworks show are being collected at all three banks in Grant as well as In & Out and Kwik Stop. The continuation of the show rely’s on these donations from the community and are very much appreciated!
