Ogallala Relay for Life luminary walk scheduled for Sept 16
The Relay for Life luminary walk is set for Thursday, Sept. 16 and will be in conjunction with the North Platte rendezvous, which is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 25.
Due to a lack of teams signed up, it was not possible to hold the full event locally, so Ogallala will be holding a “mini” luminary walk, according to Joyce Walls.
The walk will go down Spruce Street from around 1st and 2nd St. Walls said they would like to have everyone set up at six that evening, and they will light the luminaries at dusk, which she estimates could be around 8:30.
Those interested in purchasing a luminary in memory or in honor of a family member or friend who has been affected by cancer can purchase them from Walls for $10.
Walls said she would see to it that those who purchase a bag receive theirs, and they can be decorated before delivery if needed.
Anyone is able to participate in the luminary walk, and Walls said they especially appreciate the participation from cancer patients and survivors.
Walls also encourages survivors to register as such. Those names are submitted to the American Cancer Society, and registered survivors will receive a free Relay t-shirt.
Following the event in Ogallala, the luminaries will go to North Platte for their Relay event on Sept. 25.
North Platte’s Relay for Life schedule begins at 6 p.m. with the opening ceremony honoring those who have been affected by cancer.
Next are the survivor/caregiver walk and the luminaria ceremony, and lastly the evening will end with the closing ceremony, a time for committing to action and leading the world to eventually be cancer-free and a time to celebrate what has been accomplished.
Those interested in purchasing a luminary can contact Walls at 308-280-0320 or wallsjm@yahoo.com.
“We would appreciate support,” Walls said. “Every little bit helps!”
