Ed Dunn makes it official—files for legislative seat
Ed Dunn of Grant has made it official—he’s seeking the state legislative seat being vacated by Sen. Dan Hughes of Venango.
Dunn’s name was recorded as a candidate on the state’s 2022 candidate list last week.
As of Monday, Dunn was the only candidate who’s filed for the District #44 seat with the Nebraska Secretary of State’s office.
Hughes is unable to seek re-election due to term limits. He is now serving his eighth and final term in the Nebraska Unicameral.
After the 2020 census, most of Perkins County was moved into District #42. The southwest part of the county, including Grant and Venango, remains in District #44 with the rest in #42.
Current #42 State Sen. Mike Groene of North Platte is also term-limited and is in his final year as state senator.
So far, three candidates, all from North Platte, have filed for the District #42 seat—Chris Bruns, Mel McNea and Brenda Fourtner.
Incumbent office-holders are facing next week’s Feb. 15 deadline to file. They must file on the earlier date even if they are seeking a different elected position.
All other candidates have until March 1 to file.
All but one incumbent among the Perkins County officials have filed for re-election.
Incumbent county commissioner Ron Hagan, Dist. 2, has not filed. James Vak has filed for that seat.
While incumbents Mayor Lisa Schmitt and council member Andrea Brueggeman have filed, incumbent council member Tierney Peterson had not yet filed on Monday this week, according to County Clerk Rita Long.
There had been no filings yet as of Monday for three seats on the Perkins County School Board.
There are also three openings on the Perkins County Hospital Board, but no filings as of Monday.
Two seats will be up for election on each of the Elsie, Madrid and Venango Village Boards this year. No filings have been received, but those boards have a later July filing deadline.
Here is the full list of local filings Long had received by Monday afternoon.
