The decision by Chase County to start its cross country meet at 9 a.m. instead of 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 8, provided cooler temperatures for all, and proved to be advantageous for the Perkins County teams. Both teams, once again, brought home excellent times, according to Head Coach Seth Burge.

Boys Team

For the boys team, sophomore Mason McGreer once again put in an incredible effort, Burge said. McGreer placed third behind the two top ranked Class D runners, improved his personal record by 19 seconds, and beat the 4th and 5th positions by nearly a minute.

“It’s hard to run alone and still earn personal bests, so I commend Mason for that,” Burge said

Sophomore Brock Tines also put in an excellent showing, breaking 21 minutes again, Burge said.

“Mason and Brock are having an excellent week in practice after coming off of a busy weekend of musical performances,” Burge said.

Senior Brient Wood continued to improve and ran well at the race, while freshman Gavin Kohmetscher got his first race experience and a nice finish after being out with illness last week, Burge said

Girls Team

For the girls team, senior Meredith Gloy earned a 9th place medal and broke her personal record set at the 2021 district meet, with junior Maggie Fisher coming in just under 27 minutes, Burge said.

“Both Meredith and Maggie thrived in the cooler morning weather Thursday,” Burge said.

Brenna Colglazier and Ava Reese did not run at Chase County due to injury.

Junior High Participates

Perkins County does not have a junior high cross country team. However, Burge allows the junior high student managers to participate in the CC junior high race each year. Running for Perkins County were Eli Goodell and Logan Barry. Out of 42 junior high boy runners, Goodell ended up winning the event with a time of 10:38, while Barry got 18th with a time of 13:36.

“They both had phenomenal runs at Chase County,” Burge said. “To see Eli and Logan’s respective races makes me excited for the future of our program.”

Coming Up

This week the teams head to McCook on Thursday, Sept. 15 at 4 p.m. McCook’s course is by far the hilliest course they see all season, Burge said.
