Perkins County Cross Country runners faced hot temperatures, steep hills, and were covered in gnats by the end of the race in McCook on Thursday Sept. 15, according to Head Coach Seth Burge.

Despite the physical challenges, and competiting against A and D schools, the team did manage to come home with a couple of medals, he said.

Sophomore Mason McGreer again dominated for the teams during the day, coming in as the individual champion on the boys side.

“With Wallace and St. Pats attending other races that day, we hoped Mason would see some matched competition,” Burge said.

McGreer ended up leading alone the entire second half of the race.

Sophomore Brock Tines also ran a smart race, Burge said, finishing within 30 seconds of his personal record,

“For the McCook course that is an impressive feat,” Burge said.

Freshman Gavin Kohmetscher had an “outstanding” personal best, Burge said, shaving nearly three minutes from his first race of the season.

For the girls, senior Meredith Gloy worked hard to keep her placing streak and medaled once again this week.

“As a senior, this was Meredith’s 4th time running this course and she has improved her time by 4 minutes since her freshman year,” Burge said.

Last year the McCook course was cut short by two kilometers due to heat, so this was Maggie Fisher’s first time

tackling the full course and she ran well.

Coach Stephenson and I keep track of each runner’s time and place at each mile of the race. It was encouraging to look back on the statistics of this race and see that all Perkins County runners advanced their placings throughout the race by passing their competitors. Brient and Gavin both passed over 30 of their competitors between the first mile and the finish. As coach Paula Wurst would say: “We are foxes, not rabbits.”
