Veteran’s Day programs being planned in Grant, Wallace

Area events are being planned for Veteran’s Day, Friday, Nov. 11.

To honor the area veterans, programs are scheduled at the  Perkins County elementary and Jr./Sr. high, along with Wallace. 

The Perkins County elementary school will have a program at 9 a.m. 

A breakfast will be held as well for veterans and spouses at the elementary starting at 8 a.m.

The high school’s program is set for 10:30 a.m. in the gym. Veteran, Dick Ogren is serving as this year’s guest speaker.

Perkins County high school students will also take part, with Boys and Girls State members being recognized and speaking, and with students anticipated to provide special music during the day. A meal will follow the program in the school’s multipurpose room.

The Perkins County events re sponsored by the Madrid, Grant, Venango and Elsie American Legion Posts.

Wallace Program

In Wallace, the Veteran’s Day program will begin at 9 a.m. CST at the Wallace school gym. 

As in year’s past, the classes at Wallace Schools have been taking part in events to prepare for the Veteran’s Program, according to organizer Mickey Phillips. 

Cynthia Wickizer, the legion auxiliary president, will have presented the sixth grade class booklets on flag etiquette. Veteran Lynn Swanson will teach the students how to fold the flag correctly and they will demonstrate this on Veterans Day. 

Phillips and Kathy Swanson will award cash and candy prizes to the junior high student who prepares a winning essay and to the elementary students winning artwork. 

Jamie Einspahr will present his project of battle boxes where he sends to an active service men and women overseas a present from home including snacks magazines games and toilet articles.

Music teacher Ella Jameson’s high school choir and band will perform patriotic songs, and art teacher Melissa Nelms will have artwork displayed from students.

Junior high English teacher Danielle Snider, has high school students preparing essays on what American honor means. The high school students are also interviewing veterans and will produce a video to be shown during the event. 

Diane Bryant and Mitzi Gartrell will have a table set up in the entryway of the school with samples of the bricks and pavers that will be placed on the new Veterans Memorial Wall next spring when the weather is warm enough for the concrete to set. 

And, finally, High School Principal Bob Braithwaite will conclude the ceremony and invite the veterans to a breakfast of cinnamon rolls and coffee.
