This week’s games to watch required a spreadsheet

A

nother busy week in the sports world, with state tournaments, Husker games, and world series all going on to the point where I had to make a spreadsheet of all the events and then see how many you could actually see or attend. Due to Covid intervention, I only attended one event in person and that was watching my grandson Kyler play basketball on Friday. His team played on Friday, again on Saturday, and then on Sunday afternoon. I only saw one game. Part of me thinks that three games in three days are a bit too bunch for an eleven-year-old, but what it was, was too many for old grandpa. Still getting over the aftereffects of Covid, so naps are still plentiful in my day’s plans.

I always enjoy Kyler’s games. He had a good outing and scored in double figures and really made Grandpa happy because he plays hard on defense as well as offense. Finishing this up on Sunday and found out that Kyler’s team won the tournament this weekend and in the two games I didn’t get to see, Ky had 32points on Saturday and 20 on Sunday. Got to brag on him just a little.  Anyway, that was a highlight for me this week.

The Husker football was a little bit of good but still not able to close the deal. The first half was a surprise, but a good surprise as the Huskers held the Gophers scoreless. But just as game after game, Nebraska could not close the deal and get a win.

There were times when Nebraska’s defense was really good. They looked nothing like their performance in some earlier games.

Minnesota’s offense wasn’t doing a lot against the Huskers and things looked pretty bright. It got dimmer as the game went to the second half and we end up with another close loss. The rest of the schedule doesn’t look good for wins if we keep making the same mistakes and maybe not so good even if they play well.  Always hope for the best!

The volleyball team got back on track and swept another opponent. Indiana played tough but the Husker women won 25-22, 25-18, and 25-19. This is being written on Saturday evening so the Huskers will play tomorrow at Northwestern and hopefully will keep their place at the top of the conference. The Big 10 volleyball is pretty tough from top to bottom, so if you are going to be successful you better play well each time you hit the court.

The girls’ volleyball tournament had some outstanding teams with some teams winning their division an outstanding number of times in a row. The two things that caught my eye were that Skutt Catholic won for the 8th year in a row I believe and the other team Lincoln Lutheran was 40-0 for the season. Watched some of the tournament games on TV and there were some really good athletes on the teams. I think they get better every year.
