The Wallace girls’ basketball team opened its season against two ranked opponents last week. The Wildcats lost to Wauneta-Palisade, ranked eighth in Class D2, Thursday and Maywood/Hayes Center, second in Class D1, Friday.

Wallace Head Coach Shawn Sullivan said the match up with the Broncos was a tough physical game right out of the gate.

Dajana Garrison kept the game close late in the first and early in the second quarter with seven-straight points. Reagan Pelster hit one three pointer in each quarter, finishing the night with 4-7 shooting from behind the arc and 12 points. Wallace trailed 20-26 at halftime.

The Wildcats didn’t let WP pull away in the third quarter. Garrison chipped in another five points to keep Wallace within seven points, 32-39, going into the fourth quarter. Pelster’s three pointer was Wallace’s only field goal of the final stanza and free throws by Karlie Finley and Kaley Sauser weren’t enough to keep the game close. The Wildcats lost 38-56.

Sullivan said his team knew it had to key in on post play and it struggled keeping WP off the boards.

“It’s always a fun competitive battle between us,” he added.

Garrison scored 12 points. Finley pulled down 11 rebounds.

Things didn’t get any easier for Wallace the following night in Hayes Center against the high powered Wolves.

Sullivan said MHC is capable of scoring from anywhere and plays very tough defense.

Nine Wolves scored in the first half, leaving Wallace trailing 15-39 at halftime.

The Wildcats’ defense stepped up in the third quarter, holding MHC to eight points.

Kendyl Flaming had a great night shooting from the floor. The junior was 5-5 and led the Wildcats with 10 points. Finley totaled nine points and 13 rebounds.
