The Perkins County Plainsmen suited up for a “Throwback” game last Tuesday night at home in Pritchett Gym, going up against a strong and scrappy Maxwell team. Perkins County would come out on top, however, after putting in a strong show in the last part of the game, beating the Panthers 43-34.

For Head Coach Todd Kraus, the game went as expected.

“The Maxwell boys are tough, physical type kids and they play really     hard,” he said.

Kraus commented that the Plainsmen did not play very well defensively in the first half, but he was pleased with how the his team came back after half to fight for the win.

“We responded well, but it took us a while to get as physical as we needed to be,” he said. “We executed down the stretch.”

The Plainsmen had the lead at the end of the first quarter, 14-11, and it looked like they might keep it. However, the Panthers fought back.

Maxwell has played Perkins County hard in the past, and this time it was not different, Kraus said.

“They showed up and fought,” Kraus said. “I give credit to both teams for their hard fought game.”

Showing leadership during the game was junior Nolan Foster. Foster’s run of seven points at the end of the third quarter helped put momentum behind the Plainsmen, giving them the lead headed into the fourth.

Also pivotal to the Plainsmen’s win was their free-throw shooting in the fourth. Jackson Wykert led the Plainsment in this area.

Besides the win, Kraus said the Throwback atmosphere also made the game special.

“Playing on Pritchett court and giving the boys a little taste of basketball history at Perkins County was neat,” he said.

Leading for the Plainsmen in points was Wykert with 13, followed by Foster and Landon Noyes, each with 9, Blake Garner with 8, Colton Kroeker with 2, and Oscar Boldt and Ryder Potts each with 1.

For free-throws, Wykert led with 4, with Boldt, Foster, Noyes, and Potts each having 1.

Kroeker led with assists with 3, followed by Potts and Wykert with 2 and Noyes with 1.

For Maxwell, Taylor Cheek led with 14 points, Ty Robinson had 10, Easton Jones had 6 and Trevor Cohn with 3.

Coverage of the Akron and Potter-Dix games will be in next week’s edition.
