Plainsmen boys take first place
Coach Seth Burge and his Perkins County Cross Country Team traveled to North Platte last Thursday, Sept. 5 and had a successful day with the boys team finishing first overall, and two Plainsmen earning the first and second place finishes!
Elijah Goodell took first place at the meet with a time of 15:44 to set a new school record. 17 seconds behind Goodell was senior Mason McGreer who finished with a time of 16:01 which earned him the second place medal.
Coach Burge said of the boys success, “overall the boys team blew me out of the water! All 12 of these boys had spectacular races for the first meet and I can’t wait to see how they continue to progress as the season goes on.
Elijah Goodell should be commended for his sub-sixteen minute performance that broke the PCS XC boys 5k record. He has worked tirelessly since state track in May to prepare for this season, logging an impressive 350 miles during our nine-week Summer Run Club.
We have several pairs of boys that run together and push each other in practice so it was fun to see them battle it out and then congratulate their teammates at the finish.
Of the 12 boys, nine of them had personal record times and the other three had course bests.
A couple of the boys teams we competed against at this first meet are ranked high in class D, so taking first place as a team is exciting. The boys are ready to bring home more plaques this season.”
The Lady Plainsmen finished eighth place as a team and did have some illness play a factor into the day.
“We had a couple girls out this first meet due to injury and illness. The three returning girls had a great first race and improved their times on this course from last year, a testament to the summer miles they logged as part of our Summer Run Club. Emry was just out of the medals and had a personal record time. It will be fun to see these girls improve throughout the season,” said Coach Burge.
Today, Sept. 12 the team is in Chase County and results can be found in next week’s issue of the Grant Tribune.
