Another successful week of basketball is behind the Plainsmen boys. On December 10th they beat the Haxtun Bulldogs with a score of 68-49 at the Plainsman home court.

They then hit the road to defeat the Kimball Longhorns 69-60 on December 13th. Plainsmen now have a record of 3-1 so far.

HAXTUN

Plainsmen started off strong with 21 points in the first quarter. Senior Maddox Lee carried the team with 8 out of the 21. Quarter two was also a success as they scored 3 more points than the opposing Bulldogs. Overall in the quarter they gained 11 points bringing the count to 32 points at halftime whereas Bulldogs only had a total of 18. In the third quarter, Plainsmen racked up 19 points and lastly the Plainsmen finished strong with 17 points in the fourth quarter. Overall, seniors Jackson Wykert and Landon Noyes scored the most points, each scoring 15. In total the team had 33 rebounds, 22 assists, 12 steals, and 1 block. Coach Corey Potts was extremely proud of the boys for getting the win after the loss to Bridgeport previously. “Haxtun was a great bounce back win for us (after dropping Bridgeport).  We (coaches) really challenged the boys after the loss the week before to not just work hard but to be “competitors”.  The boys took it to heart and came out in the game with a very dominate energy.  Though we missed some easy shots early the boys made up for it with their defense and very quickly started knocking shots down and didn’t look back,” said Potts.

KIMBALL

Plainsmen fought the Kimball Longhorns and managed to take home the win with a score of 69-60. Once again, the boys started strong in the first quarter, scoring 13 more points than the opposing team with a whopping 19 points. 5 of these were free throws. The second quarter was more of a challenge but Plainsmen managed to score 15 points. Half time started with a score of 34-23, Plainsmen in the lead. During the third quarter Plainsmen had 17 points and 18  points were scored in the final quarter. Overall, Plainsmen had 30 rebounds, 14 assists, 7 steals, and 2 blocks. Senior Jackson Wykert was top scorer with 18 points throughout the game. Coach Corey Potts comments, “ I knew Kimball was going to be a fast-paced high scoring challenge for us and that is exactly what we got.  We came out in the first quarter and opened the game up 19-6, but credit to Kimball because they adjusted and made shots when we struggled offensively the next two quarters.  I couldn’t be prouder of my boys though; the shots were not falling but they did not stop battling.  We won the game by 9 points and shot 19/23 from the free-throw line where Kimball was 10/23, so the old adage of “free-throws win games” held true for us.”

The Plainsmen suited up and prepare to play the Paxton Tigers on December 17. Results will be in future issues of the Tribune.
