Comment given during Commissioners meeting concerning landfill expansion
The Perkins County Commissioners met for their regular meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 18. All three commissioners were present for the meeting.
Landfill Host Agreement
A public hearing was held during the meeting on the proposed agreement with Waste Connections who desires to expand the J Bar J landfill into a 67 acre section west of the current landfill at Roads 770 and 323. Waste Connections currently owns and operates an approximate 80 acre landfill east of the proposed site.
Comments were given by the public with a suggestion offered by Dennis Demmel concerning wording in landfill reports that are sent to the state and county. The commissioners approved some minor changes to the agreement, with the agreement scheduled for board approval at the next board meeting.
Ballfield Restrooms
Public comment was heard from Jana Turner and Eric McCormick on an upgrade to the bathroom facilities at the ballfields in Grant and what community efforts have been done so far.
Turner gave a background of the project and spoke of community involvement thus far. McCormick presented a plan to potentially involve the Perkins County High School building class to construct facilities for a new bathroom. Utilizing the school’s building class would provide significant cost savings. However, this has not yet been finalized with the school.
The commissioners advised they would seek bids for doing a new leach field for the facilities. A request for funds to assist with the new restroom was taken under consideration by the board.
Veterans Service Office
Representation from the veterans service board was at the meeting to discuss potentially having an interlocal agreement with a different county to provide coverage for the vacant Perkins County Veterans position. This option will be pursued with updates to be given at a future meeting.
Update on Combining Courts
An update was given by Clerk James Brueggeman on current pending state legislation concerning the potential combining of the district court duties with those of the current county magistrate duties. Discussion was held on the subject, but no action taken.
1 and 6 Road Plan
A public hearing for the 1 and 6 year road plan was presented by County Highway Superintendent Steve Leimer. After the public hearing, the 1 and 6 year plan was adopted as presented.
Next Meeting
The next meeting of the Perkins County Commissioners will be Monday, March 3 at 8:30 a.m.
