Commissioners approve road repair, discuss Fairground improvements

The Perkins County Board of Commissioners met for their regular meeting Monday morning at the County Courthouse in Grant, addressing a full agenda that included infrastructure improvements, fairgrounds development, and updates to county services.

Chairman Steve Tucker called the meeting to order at 8:30 a.m., with Commissioners Darin Robertson and Mark Bottom present, along with County Attorney Richard Roberts and Clerk James Brueggeman. 

Notice of the meeting had been published in the Grant Tribune-Sentinel and posted on the county website.

Commissioners approved minutes from the March 17 meeting and unanimously passed the agenda and claims for payment. 

Total county employee salaries for the period amounted to $91,982.80. 

The board reviewed and approved a detailed list of expenses across departments, including roads, general operations, public transit, and emergency services.

Road Grading and Repairs Take Center Stage

A key issue raised during the public forum, which ran from 8:40 to 9:25 a.m., was road maintenance. 

Local residents Kasey Kroeker and Elliott Peterson expressed concerns about county road grading. 

Later in the meeting, commissioners approved a $19,960 bid from Shelco Asphalt & Paving for road repairs on the Elsie/Paxton route.

Additionally, the Board reviewed and approved a service agreement between the Perkins County Roads Department and iWorQ, a software provider used to streamline infrastructure management.

Fairgrounds Projects

Members of the Perkins County Fair Board, including Kroeker, met with commissioners to discuss several proposed improvement projects at the fairgrounds. 

These included plans for a new 4-H Show Barn, potential water drainage solutions, and upgrades to the 4-H Exhibit Hall. 

No formal action was taken.

  New Appointments and Agreements

The Board appointed Nick Turner to represent District 2 on the Perkins County Health Services Foundation Board. 

They also voted to approve a proposed agreement transferring the Ex-Officio duties of the Clerk of the District Court to the Clerk Magistrate of the Perkins County Court.

In other action:

Commissioners approved Resolution 2025-6, renewing the county’s Noxious Weed Control Notice.

Resolution 2025-7 was passed, allowing the temporary use of a state highway for the Perkins County Fair Parade.

A revised bid from Kidwell for installing security cameras at county facilities was accepted, with adjustments made to the original scope.

County Officer Reports

The Board received operational updates from Sheriff Jeffrey Miller, EMT-A Travis Ogg, Highway and Noxious Weed Superintendent Steve Leimer, and Clerk James Brueggeman. 

Fee reports for the first quarter of 2025 were acknowledged from the Clerk, Register of Deeds, and Clerk of the District Court.

The next regular commissioner meeting is scheduled for Monday, April 21, at the Perkins County Courthouse.

The meeting adjourned at 12:12 p.m.
